Possible courses of action
- Narratives - maybe fake news bulletin signalling all things government had done for climate (all that would want) Did I dream this.
Maybe chidlren or adult stories of how life could be.
PRIORITY
Radiators and plumbing.
When fitting a nut, to what it screws on to, looking directly at the nut head, it is clockwise to tighten, and anticlockwise to loosen. If looking from above it's the opposite.
Any joints with an olive should not be reused - so need to take out the pipe and the olive back to a joint such as an elbow or tee or coupler. (If the olive stayed in exactly yhe same position (rather than neeeding to twist the pipe out for exmple for a deeper radiator than the one replacing,) then it might be alright.
In general, I thin it best to put extra couplets in, so it's easy when need to make changes to take the pipe plus olive out of the coupler
Before start turn the heating off (turn thermostat down to zero) and if tank in loft ensure the ballcock stays up so it does n't signal by going down that the tank needs refilling. This stops the pipes and radiators refilling.
If want all radiators drained open their thermostat and lockshield valves and their bleed valves. If only want some to retain their water, close their valves.
Drain the systems from drain valves by attaching hose to one and taking outside over threshold. (have plentry of paint trays and tinfoil containers handy in case of spills.
When come to remove the radiator, close their thermostst and lockshield valves and the bleed valveto avoid any leaks. When remove leave the valve attached to the radiator to ensure no leaks, so unscrew using a plumbers wrench or large spanner the screw immediately below the valves. Have some blocks of wood ready to support the radiator when lifted off the valves - but if the rad has water in it or is big , then it will be too heavy for one (better to have drained first, but may still be too heavy -so get a friend or Letts person).
If not too heavy, can open one valve and drain one corner into a tray by tipping up the other end- may need to turn the valve on and off in order to give time to empty the tray. Maybe drain the bleed valve first.
Once drained, can remove the two valves if replacing the radiator.

We fixed hooks into wall for rose and put a third crossbar up on the posts that screen the dustbins and tied the honeysuckle to it.
Sun 3rd-Sat 9th Fitting radiators and removing old. After Frank got stressed and fell (on Fr 1st Dec when we had to go to Minot injuries to have hair-lacing (like stitching) to his head injuries, and on the next day we discovered his wrist all swollen and bruised, I took over and started to remove radiators being carefuk to turn off valves. As the week wore on, we had to have car collected cos on the way back from hospital Frank drove over something - p the kerb and flattened a tyre. So on the Wed we stopped to collect it and get more supplies from Screwfix. Around Thurs or maybe Wed pm frank was helping to measure for brackets, unpack new rads and pivotting rads onto brackets without using wrist much. And Fri afternoon we had to stop and got to 23 to have stopcock replaced. Sat 9th we finished the dry run of sitting all pipes sand elbows, etc.

22 Mar Phoned GP surgery to say woul not be going ahead with spyrometer test. [Didn't actually, couldn'ta ctually, check with Moorfields. Decided to not do anyway on basis of original advice from Moorfields re not increasing pressure in my eyes (like Valsalva) but also just lowering my head (cos og hypotony). But als the NHS advice about not increasing pressure in head especially for recent surgery in glaucoma, but somewhere else on NHS it said glaucoma and of course I have hypotonyy. FInally when I am running I test my oxygen with oximeter and not found low so mt be OK. Also if did find anything wrong (COPD tested) I would not want more drugs so the only value in test would be to eliminate it as a factor in my state when running.

All things necessary to restart are on sewing machine table - janome instructions, material, The cotton used and my new scissors are within the sewing machine cover - scissors on top, cotton in the tray. The stage I stopped at is wither to try machining the gathers in the waist at the back - to see if it made a difference to how it looked (mainly whether it looked less baggy. The next step (if the waist machining made no difference) is to take in the sides (and therefore also take in some of the armhole) so that automatically reduces the size of the lower part - this might be better all round and not bother with the first step on the waist - just reluctant really to alter all my nice finished armholes. but it would probably be the best in the end, so could go straight to it. My only worry is that by taking it in, one might lose some of the nice loose feeling -so be careful.

- Hedging - for 6 - will have the free ones (mainly hawthorn (and some of blackthorn, Field maple, Dogwood, Crab apple, Guelder Rose, Dog Rose, and Hazel. ) But we also nuy some that we like and are mostly good at screening: hornbeam (retains leaves and are bright yellow/orange), lonicera (very dense and fast growing ), Hazel fast growing (last to lose leaves, and v big leaves which are bright yellow in autumn.) Maybe privet which is similar to lonicera. (But maybe elder (fast growing), guekder but maybe too dry, but pretty colour. Wild Cherry - good autumn colour. Amelanchier Canadensis - lovely autum colout. Can grow into a tree in the hedge, mt be too dry it's like guelder appreciates wetter soils)

- 16.10.222 Put up window reflective film. Trickier than thought - p cos so bis to hold. Had to make up a solution of 3 drops of washing up liquid to hald a litre of water in a sparay (squirty) bottle. Spray the window and squeegee it (new lean undamaged squeegie) to clean it first. Then cut film to rough size - did on part by Frank holding the film to the window and me marking it a few inches bigger than necessary, and in part by measuring where I had marked was more than the window size. AFter I cut it to the top and bottom marks and along the bottom - while Frank holding it still by the window. Then, after a break, I sprayed the window again to wet it and Frank held out the film (1730 By 1110)so I couldbegan to peel the protective layer down while spraying the under side. Had to respray the window cos had dried by time I'd finished peeling off the protective layer. Then we had to position it on the corner of the window and try sliding the rest into place wuthout folds. (We had already tested with a sample piece they provided whether the solution was too soapy (so film slips) or not soapy enough (so film doesn't stick. All went well. Then we had to cut any excess off.
We did this but afterhaving done it there still seem to be a slight overlap with the filler around the frame - so we have to do more - but by now it had got too dark. - Fixed mineral wool on top of plate to seal bottom. - initially down to 43 - didn't stay there though next day.

Roof (still to do Put ash in garage to remove dampness
27-28 Aug More scraping and painting as discovered more paintwork that needed doing - under front windowunder side kitchen window andd odd bits ellsewhere, Still clamping.
25-26 Aug Third coat over garage barge and around door. Scraping and priming barge board by side path. Clamping front and back roof felt. More clamping and topcoat on barge board by side path
18 -19Aug Filling with new better filler around garage door. Underpainting and topcoat.
16 Aug Scraping out old paintwork around garage door and roof
9 -10Aug Sorting out moss from c 8 bags and separating gravel and sedums. Taking buckets of gravel to roof. Painted and clamped back edge of roof Raked out and spread sedums,
1-2-3 Aug 23 Trimmed and glued front edge and stuck down. Also glued on some grravel near edge.
Fr 28 Jul Tested whether needed clamping if also wiped back edge with white spirit. It does so bought more clamps and gloves and glued remaining strips on back of garage, left for 2 hours then stuck together and clamped.
Fri 27 Jul Glued one piece at back and clamped for 1 day
We 26 Jul Cut felt at back of garage ready to glue and clamp each section.
Fri 21 Jul Still a bit to dry out before o sealing. Sealed and glued joins. Now uncovered and raining tomorrow.
Wed 19 Jul Rolled back tarpaulin and some of roof felt to dry - wind let in soe of rain from torrential storms - first opportunity to dry out to finish the sealing that left in order to fix the joist so the fixing wouldn't stretch a stuck down felt.
Mon 10 Jul Scraped away rotten wood in corner on left side (looking out) of garage. Added hardener. Added some vertical wood further out (beyond corner where the plywood cracked. Took out recently fitted supports at front by door. Sawed the end of the wood at right angles to allow a long piece from the table to be fitted over the front joist above the door - long enough that should be able to screw into non-rotted wood. Raised the front end using acropop on this sawn wood. Then fitted long piece to joist and screwed.
Fri Jul 7 Used acroprop to support and raise joist and nailed then screwed in end-joist plates. Added extra support under joist
Jun Frank removed rotten wood ends and painted with wood hardener and added bits of wood to back and front areas to raise up.
Tue 27 Jun Laid 4th strip but in 3 parts cos a convex and concave corner and a raised part. Laid 3rd strip, no complicated corners. Mo 26 Jun Laid 2nd strip.
Thu 22 Jun Bought a tarpaulin. and end plate to go over end joist and raise roof where dips and collects water
Tue 20 Jun am heavy rain so had to wait for puddles to dry out (Dee bac 21.9 25 19.9 25k on Wed)
Mon 19 Jun Laid first strip . Su 18 Jun Started roof clearing of doil, sedums and gravel. Bought felt yesterday.

It's natural for some to think of change apprehensively. But change can be good once we know. There are good and bad sides to most things, but what we are used to often tops our preferences. After all it is easier to do what we have always done. But lets look at what the world could be, adding some of the cons as well as pros and cons of what it is now.
Awake to bird song. Make way to bus where meet other regulars. Choose to read over notes rather than chat. From window notice the change in front gardens from paved drives to wildflowers around the base of fruit trees. The bus is quite but people chat happily on their way to work. I arrive relaxed, ready for the day. - CONSUMPTION - the trends that we have to change our whole house furnishings regularly - cushions, covers. See people on retail feedbacks saying how they have tto have this product in every colour, how their towelling robe last year s better quality than the one they bought this year. Have we gone mad?

UN ActNow

"ActNow is the United Nations campaign for individual action on climate change and sustainability"
"The ActNow campaign was launched at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 24) in December 2018, with a call from Sir David Attenborough in conjunction with the award-winning “People’s Seat” initiative."
They have a mobile app, provided by AWorld, which provides a "fun and gamified experience" to "learn about sustainabilty". It provides:
- Journeys: Educational & inspiring content sorted in episodes ...
- Habits: Fun and sustainable actions you can take everyday ... For each action taken, the impact tracker will measure if it is water, CO2, energy or waste you are saving.
- Challenges: Groups of people that take matters into their own hands, and act for the planet. You can contribute to a challenge by taking and logging your actions.
- Tips: Easy daily minute reads to help live a sustainable lifestyle. They come in a form of Weekly Trending topics ...
- Impact Tracker: This keeps track of your actions and shows you exactly how much your new lifestyle is saving
The data collected by the app is presumably shared with Count Us In, although it doesn't seem to directly correspond to Count Us In pledges.
Leo Di Caprio (maybe check contact possibilities to see if copied everything)
Home page of his personal website has a link to "Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation" (http://leonardodicaprio.org/), which redirects to re:wild (see below).
The home page also a paragraph about the foundation:
"The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation is dedicated to the long-term health and wellbeing of all Earth’s inhabitants. Through collaborative partnerships, we support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. LDF works in 4 key areas: Species, Oceans, Wildlands, Climate"
There's also a form "Join Us - What issue do you care about the most?", which I have "subscribed" to. Might provide more info on whether the foundation is still active and doing anything other than 're:wild'.
On his biography page there's another form "Join Us - Sign up for email updates and help us protect the planet." - clicking on the 'Register' button for this gets a 404 response.
I haven't found an email address for Leo, only a postal address: Leonardo Dicaprio, Appian Way Productions, 9255 Sunset Blvd., Suite 615, West Hollywood, CA 90069 USA. "Appian Way Productions" is his own production company.
Another possibility is to try going via re:wild - see below.
"We support projects around the world that build climate resiliency, protect vulnerable wildlife, and restore balance to threatened ecosystems and communities."
"The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation is now part of Earth Alliance
A new philanthropic partnership dedicated to urgently addressing climate change and environmental threats to life on Earth."
Founded in 1998.
There is a contact form, but "This form has been deactivated and is closed to any further submissions."
There is also a contact button, which is a mailto link to Earth Alliance.
I think this website (https://stage.leonardodicaprio.org/) is probably no longer in use.
Leo's personal website has a link to "Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation" (http://leonardodicaprio.org/), which redirects to re:wild (see below). This suggests that re:wild has replaced the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.
"Earth Alliance, a new organization to help address the urgent threats to our planet’s life support systems – born out of the shared passion of its founding co-chairs: environmental activist and Academy Award®-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio, businesswoman and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, and investor and philanthropist Brian Sheth."
Formed in July 2019.
Earth Alliance no longer seems to be active. The website has only a single page (half of which I've quoted above), with a link to a YouTube video and a mailto link, but no other links. There have been no posts on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram since May/June 2021.
"Re:wild's mission is to protect and restore the wild to build a thriving Earth where all life flourishes."
"Re:wild launched in 2021 combining more than three decades of conservation impact by Leonardo DiCaprio and Global Wildlife Conservation, leveraging expertise, partnerships and platforms to bring new attention, energy and voices together"
There's a contact page with a contact form and email address: hello@rewild.org.

XR GLOBAL NOTES
XR -What is XR
From 2nd value -
Aim to reach 3.5%
"..The world is deeply unequal, with wealth and power levers concentrated in a small minority.
From Value 4 We openly challenge ourselves and this toxic system
There is a value in us making changes in our own lives to reflect the changes needed, such as changing our diets, where we go on holiday and so on (however personal responsibility can be overstated and is based, to some extent, in privilege). For all of these challenges we ask for room, patience and willingness to try new things to see if they support our goals.
The time to act is now
Traditional strategies like petitioning, lobbying, voting and protest have not worked due to the rooted interests of political and economic forces. Our approach is therefore one of non-violent, disruptive civil disobedience – a rebellion to bring about change, since all other means have failed.
XR Global- Why rebel tab:
The possibilitiy of transformation
But guess what? The rapid, mass mobilization of people and governments to Covid 19 shows us how quickly we can turn things around when required. ... We have the example; We have the example; we have seen we can massively shift our behaviors and economic systems when required.
"..Now is the time to acknowledge the facts of the Climate and Ecological Emergency, and apply the same thinking - mitigate and adapt to a future that is quickly barreling towards us. Build resilient systems, support the most vulnerable, shift to regenerative and distributive economies, and live within our ecological boundaries. We can shift the systems that have brought us to this point, because we have no other choice. We must reset our relationship with the Earth."
What makes XR different
"... We recognize our institutions are not taking this crisis seriously, and therefore we must shift the power back to the people to make the bold decisions needed through Participatory Democracy and Citizens’ Assemblies."
You are XR
Extinction Rebellion is made up of people from all walks of life, different backgrounds, cultures, and political affiliations - people like you, coming together to create a different story. We know the crisis we are facing, and we want to change the future. This fight is all of ours, and we all need to be willing to stand up for the truth and face it together.
This is why we, as rebels, have come together to take action. We recognize the injustice - not just to the world’s poor, but to its unborn - that nearly half of global emissions are produced by less than 20% of its population.
Non Violent civil disobedience
"...history has shown us time and time again that nonviolent protest does work as a powerful means to bring about change."
Why rebel
We have no other choice. We rebel against the systems that got us here. We rebel for the future we want. We rebel because it is our responsibility to act. We have no more time to waste. Nothing is impossible - we can still write the story we want and we will. We as individuals can make a difference, collectively. We will do this together - transform the world, create lasting change and build a better future for all.

EarthDay

earthday.org
From email 28.02.22 with ref to report from IPCC
We have to sit down and have a dialogue with friends, family, and neighbors about our changing planet and what we can do as globalcitizens to reverse course. As it stands, far too many people remain uninformed about climate change, which makes education and civicengagement all the more important. It’s been said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world;indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”1 The change we seek beings with us.
This will require individuals, businesses, and governments to act boldly, innovate broadly, and implement equitably. We have no more time to sit back and wait for further environmentaltragedy. We have the power to accelerate innovative climate action plans, to Restore our Earth, and to build a sustainable future. It is going to take all of us to Invest In Our Planet.

Transition Network is an international grassroots movement (48 countries and 23 "hubs"), with local groups engaged in community projects. The movement itself is focussed on groups doing local projects, but it's possible that the individuals in those groups might be interested in individual actions.
They have a newsletter that you can subscribe to ( by clicking on the hamburger menu and selecting 'GET OUR NEWSLETTER'). The subscription form says "for news and updates"; when you submit the form the MailChimp site (which handles the newsletter) says "for workshop attendees and interested people". I've only just subscribed (24 Feb) so I don't yet know what's in the newsletter or how frequent it is.
Local groups
Repair cafe, orchard planting, discussing active transport, stall at farmers' market.
Seems to be defunct - no activity on its website since 2015.
Trainers
There are only 6 trainers in the UK, and none local. There are 3 in Totnes, 1 in Exeter, 1 in Glastonbury, and 1 in Oxford.
There's just one in mainland Europe: in Essen, Germany.

The only immediate consequence of joining is: "We'll send you practical carbon cutting tips and inspiration, as well as updates on what Possible are up to and how you can get involved."
I received a welcome email the following day.
After another 2 days received a getting started email. Ten ideas for getting started (most of which we've already done), and:
"My co-worker Hannah will email you in a few days to ask you about you. She’ll want to know what you’re into, how you’d like to get involved, and what you’d like to see from us. She’ll also ask if you’ve got any campaign suggestions, so have a think, I’d love to hear your ideas." [bold was in original]
The 'from' email address for both these emails (from Hannah Bland and Max Wakefield respectively) was hello@wearepossible.org, so they aren't providing personal email addresses.
After a further 3 days received another email from Hannah, with a link to an anonymous questionnaire about my climate interests and how I might want to participate in Possible. You can look look at all pages of the questionnaire by clicking OK with making any selections.

"The Rapid Transition Alliance is a network of international organisations that
are engaged in practical work, research and campaigning to tackle the climate
emergency"
"We share inspiring and varied examples of rapid transition to show what kind
of changes are possible, how people can help to shape them, and what conditions
can make them happen."
They have a collection of "resources", which are articles about various climate
topics.
Articles vary in length from 800-3000 words. I think your Resurgence article,
or one of your blogs, would be a good fit with the content they have. They
don't seem to invite article submissions (only stories of rapid transitions
that have happened), but it might be worth trying anyway.

Paper by Phoebe Barnard and 14 others that "provides a guideline for our world
leaders to take bold and immediate action to avert the worst effects of the
climate crisis".
Aiming to get 25,000 signatories to paper.
They recognize that "Each of us can also work to change the culture within
society as well as specific businesses and institutions to act responsibly and
accelerate change. And each of us can make changes in our own behavior."
But their message seems to be primarily directed at government and corporation
leaders, although "Social movements, NGOs, academics, the private sector
innovators all need to be part of the solution."

OTHERS RESEARCHED
Launched Oct 2020.
Some details from a Count Us In slideshow:
Slide 6: "Count Us In focuses on a “non-activist” middle that is deeply influential but largely unreached by existing climate campaigns.
Our audience is somewhat worried about climate, but:
– it’s not their first priority
– they are put off by activism and environmentalism
– they often don’t know what to do
– they feel their actions won’t make a difference"
Slide 8: "Working with experts from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and others, we have developed a list of 16 steps that we believe are the most meaningful actions people can take on climate change, based on 3 criteria.
#1: IMPACT
Can it drive a major reduction
in carbon pollution?
#2: INFLUENCE
Will it make politicians and
business pay attention?
#3: INVOLVE
Is there something for everyone in our audience?"
Slide 12: "The Count Us In aggregator adds up the steps taken on our platform and on our partner climate action platforms, combining and synthesizing data to show the collective impact of citizen action."
Slide 14: "We have more than 100 amazing partners from sport, culture, business, civil society, faith and cities - across geographies - reaching millions of people."
"Convened by Countdown, Count Us In has been developed with partners, including:
To create an account you have to provide:
- Email address
- First name
- Last name
- Password
- Say if want to be added to mailing list
Example of taking a step:
- Choose step : Drive Electric
- How big is your car: medium (this presumably means the old car)
- What kind of fuel does it use: diesel
- How far do you drive each week: 1 to 100km
- Over the next two months are you ready to purchase an electric vehicle or will you just take a test drive: purchase or lease
- Will save 445kg CO2
- Why are you taking this step - optional, will be publicly visible:
"You're in. Congratulations! You're making a real difference! Come back in 2 months to tell us how you did so we can count your impact!"
Also get confirmation email: "You’ve chosen to Drive Electric over the next two months. Your step will be added to Count Us In - Public Team at Count Us In."
The step was supposed to be "Make your next car purchase an electric vehicle", so I was surprised to discover that I had committed to "Drive Electric over the next two months".
It seems that whenever you "take a step" you are committing to trying it and coming back after 2 months to report on how it went. The step doesn't seem to be counted until you have confirmed it (and there is no way of confirming it before the 2 months - e.g. because you have bought a car).
Another step example:
- Choose step: Green your money
- Over the next two months, what pots of money do you plan on switching to providers that don’t invest in heavy carbon polluting industries?: current & savings account
- How would you describe your current employment? working
- This will persuade others to drive down our carbon pollution on an even bigger scale.
- Why are you taking this step - optional, will be publicly visible:
"Congratulations! You're making a real difference! Come back in 2 months to tell us how you did so we can count your impact!"
Count Us In have "Partner Platforms Sharing their data". I assume that this means that counts from these platforms are "aggregated" into the Count Us In counts. The Partner Platforms are:
The Count Us In aggregator page shows the counts:
- 272,177 People
- 10,646,579 Steps taken
- 151,254,416 kgCO2e Carbon Saved
There's an image suggesting that it might be possible to break down the counts by partner platform, location, category (Food, Home, Travel, Lifestyle), but it isn't actually possible.
"Count Us In's steps platform is powered by Do Nation's technology."
Do Nation have their own set of 50 pledges ranging from more significant ones like "switch to a green energy supplier" and "meetings without the travel", to more minor ones like "use a saucepan lid" and "print double sided".
The pledges have OK descriptions of why and how, but they are not prioritized.
The pledges aren't all to do with climate - there also ones to with sustainability and health.
It seems to be possible for individuals or organizations to create their own "campaigns" to "raise pledges" - haven't spent enough time to understand what this means or how it works.
Do Nation have 47,396 users and 141,786 pledges. Given how minor most of the pledges are, the users aren't doing much.
"The Count Us In aggregator has been built by Accenture."
"Countdown (powered by TED and Future Stewards) helped incubate and initiate Count Us In, with other founding organizations."
Countdown "are bringing together scientists, activists, entrepreneurs, urban planners, farmers, CEOs, investors, artists, government officials, and others to find the most effective, evidence-based ideas out there. Our goal is to identify the bold solutions that can be activated when people break out of their silos and rise to the challenge."
"AWorld was selected as the official platform to support ACTNOW United Nations campaign for individual action on climate change and sustainability."
Hard to understand flashy website, but they seem mainly to provide sustainability "solutions" for companies and schools by getting their employees (and customers?) and students to learn by taking challenges, taking quizzes, playing games, ...
Website using David Attenborough's 'Breaking Boundaries' 2021 film to attract people to make what are essentially Count Us In pledges. Site is a sub-domain of count-us-in, but has separate accounts (I can't login using my CountUsIn email and password), the trial period is 1 month instead of 2.
I assume the pledge counts are "aggregated", even though Breaking Boundaries isn't listed as a data-sharing partner.
Very similar to the Breaking Boundaries site, but using the 'Don't Look Up' 2021 film.

"Our Aim is to create spaces and processes that enable collaboration, alignment

talking (and holding events) about how to organize themselves to do something.

One of the Daring Cicles is "Women4ClimateAction", which "promotes initiatives

I think they are primarily concerned with getting more women into influential
